Neal had angered Ninette. He shouldn’t care, but he did. A part of him admitted she was right about England’s church, but theology had been engrained in him by his grandfather, a minister of the king’s church. No one ever questioned Grandfather Wellington, even when he disowned Neal’s father for marrying a French woman. Needless to say, Grandfather had not met Ninette Curvier.

“I’d not thought about religious matters in those terms,” he said.

“Papa says it is good for us to think on things of God.”

Must she always look so fetching? “I think your treatment of me is like the Good Samaritan.” There, he’d said it.

“Merci. I hope you can one day help someone in need. Then again, as a soldier, I’m sure you help many.” She wrapped her arms across her chest and stared out beyond the cave’s entrance.

A moment ago, he despised Ninette’s questions, and now he wanted to hear everything in her pretty little head. He imagined her in a fine gown instead of the patched dress that hugged at her curves. A slip of a thought grabbed hold of his mind and traversed to his heart. Was this how his father had felt when he first glimpsed his mother? For certain, Neal had no desire to be captured by love from any woman, least of all a French one.

She touched a finger below her eye. The mere idea of Ninette in tears troubled him. Oh, his mind perplexed him with this woman. He’d rather sleep and forget about her, but his head pained him far too much.

“Do you like living on the island?” he asked.

She turned and pressed a finger to her chin, the one that had just wiped away a tear. “Most of the time. It’s beautiful with its hills and greenery. Then the cold in winter and the heat in summer can both be severe.”

He smiled. “What about this place does not please you?”

“Ah, when Papa is gone, I find it quite lonely. I’d like to live among more people, but our island suits him fine.”

“I’ve never seen you at the fort.” And he was sure he would have remembered.

She stood and paced the cave to his side. “Neal, you know how Papa feels about the English. He much prefers for me to stay here and look after the traps. After the trouble from the Chippewa, he’ll never let me go there again.”

He’d feel the same way if such a treasure belonged to him. “I’ve heard talk of building a fort here,” Neal said.

“Papa would not be happy with that news. Please don’t tell him.”

He chuckled. “You have my word. Do you know what Michilimackinac means? Seems strange that is the name of the fort and the island.”

“It means ‘big turtle.’ The Chippewa named it. If you look at the island from a distance, it resembles one. The Indians say the turtle emerged from the water with the earth on its back. It gave a place for all living creatures to live.”

“What other things do you know about the Indians?”

“Which tribes?”

“All of them.
